Mary Short had to think on her feet when she lost her job selling logistics software for a Dutch company. “They said, ‘Go home guys, you won’t get paid’,” she recalled.

It was 1987, and software was still a relatively new concept. The business had failed to secure more funds from investors, yet it had customers. One of Short’s clients had been the oil giant Shell, using the technology to estimate journey times for its huge fleet of tankers…
